More Versatile than Vinyl - Chess bags are no longer a necessity!Apr 28, 2012
By Fun Fong Jr. MD See YouTube video [...] if you are unfamiliar with silicone boards. It is a good introduction to silicone boards.
The silicone board is surprisingly 1/3 heavier than my current vinyl board - 333g vs 215g. The finish is a matte finish and there is NO shine to the surface at all, something desirable in a chess board. I find as the video demonstrates, the pieces do not slide, but grip to the board. It is significantly harder to knock the pieces over. The 1.1 mm thickness is thick enough for the board to be perceived as being durable and sturdy.
It does all as advertised. The color seems integral to the board. It will stay flat in all conditions. Pieces sit fine on a (short pile) carpeted surface. Probably the main advantage is that the board does NOT need to be rolled up. One can scrunch it up in a random ball in a backpack and pull it out without ANY wrinkling, so chess bags are no longer necessary if one doesn't like the look -- (daughter doesn't, and she'd rather use a backpack than use a chess bag, anyday!)
I have not played games on the board yet, and will update the review when I play long tournament games and blitz games using the board.
Silicone Chess matMar 27, 2012
By I Kluso This silicone chess mat is incredible! Great looking (blue and white squares)! Scrunch it up and throw it in a bag and take it to your club/tournament - take it out of the bag and it rolls out completely flat (exactly as advertised). The only negative is that it picks up lint/dust fairly easily because the silicone material is slightly tacky. It cleans up easily with a wet towel. This is really a fantastic chess mat for the casual or serious player.
