Almost a Yo-YoJan 19, 2012
By Lee J. Eden
"LJ Eden"
I've been looking for a plain, unadorned wooden yo-yo for a while now. Something with just a smooth grain, no paint or logos and a simple wooden axle. This "Looked" like it fit the bill perfectly and at an excellent price (read: too good to be true).
What I received looked about right. I'm not sure what kind of wood it is made out of though as it seemed pretty light and had an odd feel to it. Still, it was wood and this is really just a messing around yo-yo for fun and to practice some tricks now and then.
There were some problems though.
The string had a few extra, and unnecessary knots but they were close enough to the finger loop as to not be a problem. However, after a few practice throws it became obvious that something was wrong. The string was much shorter than I was used to and nothing I did could get the thing to sleep properly (read: at all). Normally this wouldn't be a problem since I could just remove the short string and replace it with one of the spares I have for my other yo-yos.
Wrong.
The string is actually glued to the axle of the yo-yo. Not just glued, but drilled into it making it impossible to replace should it break. Any attempt to remove this glued string would basically make the yo-yo unusable. Any replacement strings would be chewed up and break in no time due to the hole in the axle and any bits of glue that weren't removed.
On top of that, the two halves of the yo-yo are not lined up at all.
In summary, this product is "Almost" a yo-yo, but not quite. I have a feeling that the manufacturer of this item had only a passing understanding of what a yo-yo actually is, and probably has never actually held one.
To be fair, for $5.00 you get what you pay for and my search for a decent wooden yo-yo continues.
