The plastic fill gives them a heavier, sturdier feel than a hollowed-out set of plastic chess pieces. These are not "weighted" and are not advertised to be weighted. Set is very durable. I can't say if it's indistructable but the pieces are very strong. They are solid plastic except for the core of it through the center of the plastic. They are supposed to be this way, if you want to add a wieght inside which is optional but a good thing. These pieces are not with the added weights in them. It says in the description. The exact same pieces with the weights cost more. This set is sold for much less. The pieces are lighter. However, this is not a problem for me. They still are a great buy for the cheap price. I love how they feel in your hand, and the size is fantastic! They are huge and good size. The kind that professionals use in tournaments and the kind you see people playing in parks. If you drop them, they don't break. I only wish this set came with the board. At least it comes with a small bag you can store them all in and travel with them. Due to the cheap price, I did order another set of the same pieces which do come with a board, but no bag. That way I can have more pieces in case I lose any, and more queens which are I think, necessary in chess. You need at least 2 or 3 extra queens with each color when your pawn reaches the opposite end of the board. Then your pawn gets what I call, "reincarnated" or metamorphosized into a queen. This is how you play chess. That's why the sets all comes with at least 1 extra queen which is wonderful!
Overall, I love this set and was just what I was looking for. I am currently learning how to play chess and I love it! Even if I'm not a very good player right now but I still love to play and learn. I had bought and returned 3 chess sets already, because I was not completely satisfied with any of them because of quality and the fact that they were not easy to travel with. This one is the best above any I've seen. They are a great big size, durable, and very easy to take anywhere. I recommend any of the Strauton pieces for beginners, amatures, or professionals!

"I have a rug chess board that fits perfect on my table in our study room here at home. I purchased these pieces to use when one of my sons and I play. It works great and I can put everything away neatly when finished. The product arrived on time and they are perfect for what I wanted them for as well. Not too big, not to small and not to light weighted. Thank you."
